Idea of the Week

Most winning ads come from optimizations and heavy testing. You might miss out on potential winners if you’re constantly turning off ads and never trying to optimize them.

Creating Winning Ads

Over the last 3 years of creating tens of thousands of ads for over 80 brands, I’ve learned that most winning ads come from optimizations and heavy testing.

I’m yet to see someone create a winning ad after winning ad from scratch without a clear process behind it.

Let’s take a look at our process:

Market Research

When we onboard a new brand, we always start with a deep dive into customer reviews, comments on social media, and forums to learn about our audience.

Here's what we are looking for:

  • What common problems, questions, or skepticism did they have?

  • Were there common questions or problems that our creatives could answer?

This information would be used in concepts and scripts so that the ads we produce would resonate with the target audience.

Creative Strategy

After we have learnings from the market research, we build a creative strategy tailored to each brand.

This would be the formula for how their creatives will be scripted, filmed, and edited - with performance in mind.

We analyze what's working for other brands and how we can tailor the winning elements for our audience:

  • The ad framework that will resonate

  • The visual elements that will catch the attention

  • The editing style they will enjoy watching

Creator Selection

Now, let’s talk about our exact process when working with this dog brand.

They had a niche audience: 45+ year-old women with aging dogs.

Finding talented creators who represented their audience was challenging for our client.

We sourced several creators with senior dogs who experienced traction issues within a few weeks. We shared our process for sourcing creators in our previous newsletters.

We knew we wanted to use creators who not only represent the audience but also experience the same problems themselves.

Creator Management

While our creators' dogs did have slipping issues, it would be a challenge recreating these slips on camera.

We created a filming handbook to prepare our creators for filming and to reduce the need for reshoots.

We also helped creators during filming to ensure the products were correctly used by the dogs.

Scripting & Editing

We analyzed our audience and learned that most of our customer base (age 45 and above) responds better to slower videos rather than highly edited, fast-paced ones.

The audience also sought more educational value and had a longer attention span than a younger audience.

Our creatives reflected this by being more educationally jam-packed and, as a result, being lengthier.

This was the total opposite of the creatives we create for brands with younger demographics.

Our team made sure that the creatives we produced were speaking the language of 45-year-old dog owners.

Results

We created a couple of winning ads for this dog brand, of which some have been running for over a year now.

We reposted one of the winning ads on Instagram Reels and it was their first viral video with over:

  • 3.1 million views

Unless you’re creating specific content for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, I recommend you repost your UGC ads to these platforms as well.

We do this for our internal brands and have gained hundreds of thousands of views completely free. All it takes is a few minutes a day to post videos to these platforms.

Bonus

If you’ve made it here, you deserve to see our winning ad that has done these amazing numbers. Watch the winning ad here.

We'd love to replicate the same success for your brand and help you scale with our performance ad creative.

We will write 3 creative concepts tailored to your brand completely free to show you our process.

We've put together this training to teach you how to create a high-performing creative strategy for your brand.

This is the same process we use to build creative strategies for hundreds of brands, which has resulted in top-performing UGC ads for our clients across various industries.
